Promise Not to Tell (Cutler, Sutter & Salinas #2) by Jayne Ann Krentz

Seattle gallery owner Virginia Troy has spent years battling the demons that stem from her childhood time in a cult and the night a fire burned through the compound killing her mother. And now one of her artists has taken her own life, but not before sending Virginia a last picture...a painting that makes Virginia doubt everything about the so-called suicide--and her own past...

Like Virginia, PI Cabot Sutter was one of the children in the cult who survived that fire--and only he can help her now. As they struggle to unravel the clues in the picture, it becomes clear that someone thinks Virginia knows more than she does and that she must be stopped. Thrown into an inferno of desire and deception, Virginia and Cabot draw ever closer to the mystery of their shared memories--and the shocking fate of the one man who still wields the power to destroy everything they hold dear.

This book drew me in from the first page on. When Cabot and Virginia slowly realize what they are dealing with and when things got really, really tight, I just couldn't stop reading. I flew through the pages and I just hoped that everything would turn out well and that maybe, maybe things would get better for Virginia and Cabot as well.

As survivors of a terrible fire that took their mothers' lives when they were kids, Virginia and Cabot still suffer from nightmares and sleeplessness among other things. When something happens that makes them think that the leader of the cult that they had been part of, the same man who was responsible for the fire, might still be alive and that Virginia might be in danger, they find that it is easier to face their demons - and their enemy - together. And maybe, if they survive, they will even get a chance at love...

I loved those wonderful, multi-layered characters and I was captivated by their intriguing and interesting story. It kept me on my toes and I may have needed a hanky once or twice  - and I really can't wait to read the next book by Jayne Ann Krentz.

Even though I've read a couple of books by the author written under her pen name Amanda Quick, this is my first contemporary romance book by her but I can't wait to read other contemporary romance books by her as well.
