Beg, Borrow or Steal by Susie Tate

Beg, Borrow or Steal by Susie Tate

Jamie is proud of everything he’s achieved. A consultant anaesthetist and the Medical Education Director – he’s a pretty big deal. So when one of his medical students falls asleep, right in the middle of a tutorial, he is furious. He’s a bloody good teacher, damn it!

Maybe he could have been a little more understanding. Maybe he didn’t have to try and humiliate her. But the shock of how beautiful this particular student was when she finally opened her eyes, and his inappropriate reaction, only fuelled his anger. He’s tired of lame excuses from wild party animals burning the candle at both ends, and he’s going to make an example of this one.

For Libby, pride is a luxury and beauty is currency. Pregnant at seventeen and an aspiring doctor, she couldn’t afford to be proud, so she cashed in on her looks instead. She will beg, borrow or steal to achieve her dreams and give her daughter the life she deserves, even if she has to forgo sleep – even if she has to leave her dignity behind.
Only now that she’s not just sitting in lecture theatres like her first two years of medical school, now that she’s working in a real hospital, Libby is realizing that the thread she’s been hanging onto for so long may be about to snap. The last thing she needs is to have riled the gorgeous, judgmental Head of Medical Education. But there’s only so far you can push yourself, only so much pressure you can be under until you break. Libby’s been on that cliff edge for a while; her health may just tip her over.

A kick in the shin from a four-year-old girl and a confrontation with her tearful, exhausted mother soon forces Jamie to see what a bastard he’s been. Libby may not accept his help, but he’s relentless when he wants something, and it’s not long before he realizes that this mother and daughter belong with him. So when a stag night he’s on ends up in the best strip club in England and he sees who the main attraction is, his reaction is explosive.

Despite everything, Libby finds she still has some pride left. This man has made her feel small twice now. He won’t be getting a third shot. No matter how gorgeous he is, no matter how persistent …

This book is a full-length contemporary romance of approximately 90,000 words with no cliffhanger and its own HEA.

 Review

My first book by Susie Tate and I fell in love with Jamie, Libby, and Rosie right from the start. Libby's stubbornness made me roll my eyes once or twice but I loved to see how they figured out their life together, how they learned to understand each other's choices, and, of course, the way they included everyone around them. Millie especially holds a very special place in my heart and Rosie made me snort and laugh out loud numerous times.

I really enjoyed reading this sweet and funny book and can't wait to learn more abouther best friend Kira in "Limits".

Hard Love by Sara Nwy

Blurb

  “HARD TO LOVE.”

Hard head. Bad attitude. Terrible boyfriend. That’s what my exes have said about me—but I wasn’t serious about any of them, so what do I care what rumors they spread? What I need is to be left alone; by the press, by the paparazzi, and by women.  Too bad I’m about to be surrounded by them for the weekend. My obnoxious, matchmaking brother is getting married, and he’s doing his damndest to find me a wedding date…

 “HARD TO FIND.”

That’s what they say about good men—they’re hard to find. Not that when I find one, I’ll be the type he’s looking for; too nice, too ordinary, too boring.  My cousin is getting married, and her fiancรฉ insists on throwing me at his brother. Cold, uncaring professional football player Tripp Wallace would never look twice at a woman like me. Too bad for both of us, I was wrong…

Review

I must admit that I had a hard time with this book. It got much better towards the end which saved it but for almost half of the book I really didn't like Tripp.

Sure, some of his antics made me smile but on the whole, he simply behaved like an a... Chandler was nice. And boring. And it took her some time to find her backbone and stand up for herself. So... Well.
She didn't impress me that much either.

All in all the book was fine but I Iike the first books in the series much better.

Review

Oh my gosh, this book was just what I needed! It's the "keep me up till early morning, grab again the moment you wake up" kind of book that leaves you with a feeling of complete and utter rightness.

"Grumpy" meets "sweet and capable" in this amazing story and I just couldn't stop reading because I absolutely had to know what happened next. I enjoyed the banter, the flirtations, the grumpiness and - oh, these sparks!

Reading on while Charly conquered Maxx and all those around her one wrench and list at a time while slowly worming her way into Maxx's heart no matter how much he fights it, I feel deeply in love with these characters and those around them. This is definitely a keeper that I'll love to read again and again.

Audiobook / The Winter King (A Faeted Mates Omnibus) by Ariel Hunter

narrated by Amber Lee Connors and Kieran Flitton

A bounty hunter down on her luck.
A fae king looking for a reason to live.
A mate bond neither can deny.

Mara Wylde is a small-time bounty hunter who just can’t seem to catch a break no matter how hard she tries. Her rent’s two months overdue. Her antiques shop is failing. She’s eaten ramen five nights in a row now and is desperate for a way out of debt.

When Mara’s offered a hundred grand to nab a high fae right out of Faerie, she knows she can’t turn down the job no matter the risks.

Even if it means catching the eye of the elusive Winter King.

Tortured by his past and not-wanting to rule anymore, Vareck Blackthorne is ready to cede his crown and journey to the nether to escape his torment. Minutes from delivering this news to all of Faerie, he sees her—a fae woman with hair like the dawn and eyes that remind him of summer. A summer that has been gone for centuries.

After six hundred years of suffering he’s finally found her—his fated mate.

The only problem?

She has no idea.

THE WINTER KING is the first FAETED MATES Omnibus that includes the entirety of Mara and Vareck’s story. It was initially released in three installments, titled: Hunted by the Winter King, Taken from the Winter King, and Taming the Winter King. This is a fast-paced, hot paranormal romance series with dominant fae males and their sassy, spitfire women. Beware of cursing and steamy scenes. This is an ADULT series.

Review

Despite the good narration, it took me some time to finish listening to this book. On the whole, it was a good story and the narration was really well done. When I started to listen to it, it was interesting and captivated me but I felt myself getting distracted every now and then because the story lost a bit of its momentum.
There were some inconsistencies and some parts where I wanted to get to the heart of it and just get on with the action but all in all I enjoyed listening to these books.

The only thing really annoyed me though, ... Treating someone like THAT and justifying it with your feelings for her and that you just know that she is your mate...? Nope. That is unacceptable no matter how accepting the heroine is and how much the hero considers this behavior as normal. It's not normal in my book and I don't feel right about it.

Apart from that though, the books were nice and quick stories to listen to.

In this case, the audiobook gets four stars and the story itself 3 so...

The Culling Trials 3 (Shadowspell Academy, #3) by K.F. Breene and Shannon Mayer

 Blurb

You Don’t Choose The Academy. The Academy Chooses You.

The last of the Culling Trials is here. I foolishly thought I’d survived the worst.

My team is falling to pieces around me and my heart is shattered for the losses I’ve endured. But I can’t stop when I’m so close to the end. There are too many people depending on me.

I foolishly thought there wasn’t much more I could lose…until the nature of my bloodline comes to light.

I’m not what I thought I was. Not what anyone thought I was.
But to tell people the truth would be to kill us all.

To fail the trials will mean death, but to succeed might damn me for life
.

Even though I binged this whole series since yesterday and couldn't put it down, the series and especially this book left me rather unsatisfied. Yes, the story was intense and gripping but at the same time, it lacked some depth. I couldn't fully relate to the characters despite the fact that I really liked them and waited impatiently to learn more about them and to get more emotionally involved. Alas, I never did.
And then, finally, the big show-down, amazing scenes, fights, everything that I wished for...and then it was over and I was left with a bunch of unanswered questions, our great crew torn apart after everything they went through ...nope, no spoilers here...you have to find out yourself what happened...and I just sat back and thought something intelligent like..."Huh?"

All those wonderful questions about the main villain and his role, about Rory, about Wild and those that are out to kill her and who already killed her brother and then it turns out that these first trilogy doesn't even answer these questions but solves a problem that feels a bit, well, constructed. Yes, I can see why they introduced these characters but it feels as if everything is stretched faaaaaaaar.....just to fill these books. I can't find anything about the number of trilogies that they plan to add but I must admit that I won't read them, at least not until they are done with the whole series. This is frustrating. There is so much potential but at the moment it feels as if there are too many plots and none of them is really fleshed out.
The blurbs of books 1 and 2 mention that these books end on a cliffhanger, I was fine with that as the third book was already out and I thought that that would give me all the answers. Well, it didn't.  And I really don't know how I feel about that. I had a hard time deciding how to rate this book. It is a very weak 3.5 star-read now ...

Quarter Miles (Runaway, #3) by Devney Perry

Katherine Gates has been in love with Cash Greer since the moment he saved her life from a runaway goat. According to Cash, she’s the little sister he never had, the greatest roommate in the world and his favorite coworker. They’re friends—best friends.

In the dark days of her youth, it was her friendships that kept her alive and made life in a junkyard worth living. So she’s learned to shove her feelings for Cash down deep, even if that means ignoring eyes that shine brighter than the Montana summer sun and the smile that illuminates the snowiest winter day.

Except with every passing year, the denial takes its toll on her wounded heart until one day Katherine decides to take an impulsive road trip to the Oregon coast. Alone. That is, until Cash cons his way into the passenger seat.

The farther they travel, the harder it is to pretend. And when she confesses her feelings, she learns that Cash has some secrets of his own. Secrets that will either bond them together.
Or rip them apart.

I love Devney Perry's other books so it didn't really come as a surprise when I started to read Runaway Road, the first book in this series and was hooked. These books are just so good, captivating me and keeping me glued to my reader from the first page on, I love it!

The idea of the red Cadillac acting like some kind of baton being passed from one of these old friends to the next bringing them much needed change and love is intriguing. That this includes road trips and in the case of Katherine and Cash also the journey from best friends to lovers, well, that simply makes it perfect!

When Katherine tries to take a much needed vacation that is supposed to help her get over her feelings for Cash...okay, she honestly didn't expect him to jump on the chance to get on the road with her, let alone somehow manipulating her to take him with her...
I loved to see how those two finally figured out their feelings for each other and, of course, I also loved to learn more about our five friends from the junkyard.

Heartwarming and captivating, this book is another one that I'll definitely read again - and now I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out!

Quarantine Crush by Bam Shepherd and Heather Hildenbrand

The new book by the authors of The Girl Who Cried Werewolf ,
a nice pick-me-up that will keep you laughing and reading and that will help pass the time
if you're still sheltering in place. Or any other time, actually.

by
Bam Shepherd and Heather Hildenbrand

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

The phrase on the side of Embry’s shot glass sounds like a sign from the universe. And when her friend, Hadley, forwards her a video of the latest internet craze – The Shoot Your Shot Challenge – she can no longer ignore the cosmic push. If the women on the FlipFlop app can grab life by the lady balls and kiss their best friends, so can Embry. But what’s a girl to do when her shot gets Knox-blocked?

Knox Jacobs thought nothing would be more awkward than shooting down his best friend. Then, the Coronach-20 pandemic hits, trapping him thousands of miles from home – with the woman whose heart he just broke. But as the hustle and bustle of everyday life slips away, he finds himself wondering if maybe he’s the one who blew his shot.

Shelter-in-place is one thing. Sheltering at her place is not exactly what he had in mind.

Review

I guess, most of us got a good dose of shelter life in the last months so...just imagine for a while that you have to shelter with the one person by whom you just got shot down after having been in love with him for ages? Yeah, that's what Embry thought when all this pandemic stuff went downhill pretty fast and she was left with Knox as the one to shelter in place with. I mean, not that he felt that much better, all things considered, but, yeah.

Sooo, with nice and very much interested neighbors around and far too much time to spare and too many days to stay at home and wait for the pandemic to pass, these two were in for an interesting time!

I laughed a lot and giggled and I may have rolled my eyes and on the whole I really enjpyed the book. For a while I thought that it might go in a direction that I didn't really like and that someone would be hurt but knowing these authors and their books, I should have known better. When things worked out the way they were meant to be and when sheltering in the wrong place suddenly turns into being in the best place possible, well...I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope that you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

BLOG TOUR - The Hardest Play by A.S. Teague

Synopsis
It’s easy to convince the world that you have it all.
I was Quinn Miller: record-breaking running back, professional football’s favorite rags-to-riches story, all-around good guy.
What’s not so easy? Repairing your reputation after mistakes both on and off the field leave you labeled as a disgrace to the league.
With only one team willing to give me a chance, I had no time for a relationship.
But, after one night with Georgia Reed, the hopeless romantic with fiery red hair and an attitude to match, I was hooked.
With Georgia cheering me on, it didn’t feel like the world was against me anymore.
That was, until her father stepped into the locker room as my new head coach.
Finding the woman of my dreams was the easy part; it was keeping her that would be the hardest play of all.

Review

On the whole, I really enjoyed reading all of the books in this series up to now though I always needed some time to get into them. This one wasn't different, I started reading several times till I finally was hooked by the story.

Even though I loved Quinn and Georgia together and I liked that they didn't play games but knew what they wanted. Things were still rough due to their circumstances though I was frustrated that Quinn had so many problems that could have been solved if he had just mentioned one thing. He didn't though and I must admit that I had a hard time accepting his explanation considering the fact that his whole career was on the line and his team suffered because of all this secrecy.

There was a lot of drama and I loved how the two of them dealt with it, together and in the end, the book drew me in but still, somehow it left me a bit wanting. I thought of their interactions and their love for each other and loved it and then I'd think of those things that Quinn didn't share with his team and his coach and I was upset once again.

Demon Dawn (Resurrection Chronicles #7) by M.J. Haag

Survival requires sacrifice.

The world irrevocably changed after the hellhounds and fey appeared. Most people didn’t survive that first night. Dad had said we were lucky we did. I’m not so sure about that anymore.

With her father murdered before her eyes and her faith in the remaining humans shaken, Brenna reluctantly accepts sanctuary in Tolerance, a safe zone managed by the fey. The wall keeps the infected out. But it also keeps the humans in…with the very creatures that caused the world to break.

Big, grey, and ruthlessly deadly, the fey strike fear in the hearts of men and women alike. But Brenna finds one more intimidating than all the rest. Scarred and angry, Thallirin watches Brenna with an intensity that makes her relive the events that followed her father’s murder. She knows what Thallirin wants, and she’s never going to be used like that again.

Tormented by her past, Brenna sees no possible future other than eventual infection or starvation. There is hope, though. Her community is abuzz with a newly discovered way to protect women against the disease that’s turning people into zombies. However, it doesn’t come from a needle.

It comes from sleeping with the dark fey.

Oh my god, somehow these books keep getting better and better! I absolutely loved Demon Dawn and can't wait for the next book in this series to come out. I've read all of the books in this series and loved each and every one. They are funny, captivating and amazing, even though I must admit that at first, I wondered if it was really such a good idea to read a book set in a kind of zombie-apocalypse at a time like this when we have our own kind of apocalypse waiting outside but, well, it was the resurrection series, right? I couldn't resist!

Brenna is another wonderful character who has fought hard to survive in this new world and like many others, she had to learn that the monsters are not always those who look like it. After everything they have been through, I loved how Brenna slowly learned to love the one guy who has been waiting patiently for her to love him back - and I also loved to see her mother find someone to love as well.

If you've read the other books in this series, you will have met Thallirin already. He has not always been one of the good guys but he has worked hard to be accepted by the others again. Oh, by the way - I hope that you've read the other books already because even though most of the books apart from the first three can be read as standalones, you'd miss the world-building and you'd lack some information. It's just more fun if you read them in their order or at least read the first three before you read any of the other books.
And now - just dive in, this book is amazing, I hope that you'll love it as much as I do!

Kiss of Steel (London Steampunk #1) by Bec McMaster

When Nowhere Is Safe

Most people avoid the dreaded Whitechapel district. For Honoria Todd, it's the last safe haven. But at what price?

Blade is known as the master of the rookeries—no one dares cross him. It's been said he faced down the Echelon's army single-handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood-craving he's been quicker, stronger, and almost immortal.

When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She's so...innocent. He doesn't see her backbone of steel—or that she could be the very salvation he's been seeking.

Review
Oh my god, how did I not find these books earlier? Kiss of Steel reminded me of my love of Steampunk and books about it and I loved and thoroughly enjoyed every single page of this novel.

Once upon a time, okay, it feels like that, I read a bunch of Steampunk novels and loved them but somehow I lost sight of them - this book definitely changed that! I can't wait to read the next books in this amazing series! I'm halfway through Tarnished Knight already because that also happened to be on my TBR but I'm looking forward to all of the other books as well.

This imaginative and captivating story with its amazing characters hooked me right from the first page on and I didn't put the book down till the end. Honoria Todd and her siblings try to survive in the rookeries and when she catches the eye of its master, well, somehow this innocent young woman turns out to be much more than Blade, the hard master of the rookeries expected...

Oh, by the way - isn't this cover absolutely gorgeous?!?

Release Blitz - One Moment Please (Wait With Me #3) by Amy Daws

RELEASE BLITZ

That awkward moment when an ER doctor has to inform you that you’re pregnant…with his baby.

Three things Lynsey Jones knows about the hot doctor: he’s grouchy, an arrogant jerk, and strangely obsessed with pie.

Three things Dr. Dick knows: he doesn’t talk about his past, he doesn’t do relationships, and the crazy girl in the hospital cafeteria who ate a fistful of French silk pie…is annoyingly irresistible.

After a chance meetup at a bar and a heated cab ride together, things come to a head and now instead of hating each other, they’re horizontal in a bed.

Three months later, the weird cafeteria stalker who crept out of Dr. Dick’s house like a thief in the night, winds up as his patient in the ER after her Tinder date from hell.

Dr. Dick is prepared to keep it cool and professional. That is until her bloodwork reveals that she’s pregnant.

What really throws him for a loop…is that the surprise baby…is his.

Review

If you have read and enjoyed Wait with Me and Next in Line, you have probably already been waiting for this book to finally come out. I loved all of the books in this series so far and this one fits right in there as well. Meeting old friends and new, we learn about the creative magic of ...oh, wait, not a waiting room but a cafeteria. And don't forget the French silk pie...

When frustration and anger turn into attraction, things might get heated and when you find yourself in the ER and your doctor has to tell you that you are pregnant and you have to tell him that he is about to become a father, well..... things get really interesting.

Once again Amy Daws could captivate me with this story, she made me laugh and feel with her hero and her heroine even though our hero made me despair sometimes with his self-torture. Yes, what happened was hard and tragic but that doesn't explain why he was unable to move on or at least, well, deal with it. Sometimes the part of "I can't love anybody" and "I don't talk about my former life because it's too hard" was a bit too much. Apart from that though, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved to see these two find love and their own happy ever after.

Release Blitz - Old Fashioned (Becker Brothers #4) by Kandi Steiner

The epic finale of the Becker Brothers series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone.

It’s a man’s world.

When I declared sports medicine as my major and every man narrowed their eyes, that saying proved true. It was true when my ex-husband decided I’d give up my career when our daughter was born. And again when I divorced the Chief of Police in our small town, and he made it painfully clear that I could leave him, but I would never be free.

Landing the job as the new athletic trainer for Stratford’s high school team is my chance to start over. And walking into a male-dominated sport and staff, I’m ready for the challenge.

I’m not ready for Jordan Becker.

The head coach of our championship winning team is a Herculean force of nature—as severe as he is determined. His icy blue eyes and permanent scowl drive the women in this town mad, and his quiet power and undeniable command conjure respect from every man.

When I join his team, I expect the doubt and anticipate the fight from him. And I get them both.

I don’t expect to form a friendship.

And I never expect to fall for him.

My breath catches when those cool eyes fall to my lips. My body comes alive when his is near. And as those lines begin to blur, every warning bell sounds.

My job, my reputation are on the line.
And my ex is around every corner, waiting to remind me of his power.

It’s a man’s world, and if I want to survive, I can never fall in love with Jordan Becker.

Even if he falls in love with me first.

 Review

I really loved this series so much, from the first book to this last one. You know, when you have a great series and every time a new book goes live you are worried that it won't be as good as the others? Or even worse, when there's a continuous thread running through all of the books and you know that this last book will be the one where everything will be revealed and you are really worried  that it will disappoint you? Yep. That's how I felt - and trust me, none of it happened and I absolutely enjoyed reading this book!

The Becker Brothers and those who they love are a force to be reckoned with - and I adored the way the brothers cared for their mother! It's a wonderful family whose lives aren't always easy but always full of love, loyalty and respect for each other and those around them.

I was very curious about, well, you know what about, right? If you don't know what I'm talking about, you haven't read the other books so...go back, start at the beginning, they are absolutely worth it and you don't want to spoil it, right?!
When we finally, finally learned what exactly happened that night when... - my heart broke for these men and their mother and when more secrets were revealed...oh my... But all is well that finally ends well and you don't have to worry, this book has a perfect HEA - and I already know that I haven't read these books for the last time!

Audiobook - The Perfect First (Fulton U #1) by Maya Hughes

NOW AVAILABLE ON AUDIO!

narrated by Jason Clarke and Emma Wilder

SYNOPSIS

"How long do you last in bed?" Those were her first words to me, swiftly followed up with, "And how big would you say you are?"

Persephone Alexander. Math genius. Lover of blazers. The only girl I know who can make Heidi braids look sexy as hell. And she's on a mission. Lose her virginity by the end of the semester.

I've decided to be her guide for all her firsts, except one. Someone's got to keep her out of trouble. I have one rule, no sex. We even shook on it.
I'll help her find the right guy for the job. Someone like her doesn't need someone like me and my massive...baggage for her first time.★
Drinking at a bar. Check.
Partying all night. Double check.
Skinny dipping. Triple check.
She's unlike anyone I've ever met. The walls I'd put up around my heart are slowly crumbling with each touch that sets fire to my soul.
I'm the first to bend the rules. One electrifying kiss changes everything, and suddenly, I don't want to be her first, I want to be her only. But her plan was written before I came onto the scene, and now, I'm determined to get her to rewrite her future with me.

 REVIEW

This audiobook is once again a definite proof that a good narration can make a really good book even better. I loved and enjoyed The Perfect First when I first read it but I enjoyed it, even more, when I was listening to this amazing narration. This is one of those narrations that I will definitely listen to again and again.

I loved to see Persephone blossom and learn to live life the way she wants to live it. To see her claim her life and fall in love with Reece, one "first" after the other. And Reece, well, I think he wasn't really prepared for someone like Seph but who could resist such a charming introduction?

This was a story that drew me in right from the start. The characters are wonderful, they are very authentic and likable and the whole story was very warm and sweet. I also loved the secondary characters a lot who were also well developed and authentic. Some of them we will meet again in the next books of this series that I have also read and really enjoyed. Interesting stories with a unique twist and a lot of charm and humor. I can't wait to listen to the next books in audio as well!

I've read and loved all of the books in the Hope Valley series (and other books by Jessica Prince) but I absolutely loved the intensity and the story of this wonderful second chance story. As much as I've ranted and raved at Bryce and his actions - the more we got to know him, the more I understood him. I was still mad at him but I understood him. Almost.
Nevertheless, I was really happy when slowly, very slowly Tessa and Bryce start to overcome the problems of their past and to build a life for themselves. Together. Finally, after so much time...
Tessa is new in town, she is working for Hope House, the new place for foster kids that we saw built in the last books in this series. I love Tessa's dedication to those kids and her fervor when she fights for those kids no matter who tries to hurt them. And, of course, then there is Bryce with whom she shares more than just a couple of sweet memories and who is determined not to let his chance slip by. Most of the time.
It takes a village to...well, not exactly to raise a child in this case but the whole group of friends is once more working together to help one of their own to find happiness and a partner for life. And if there are no wedding bells at the horizon...oh, well, perhaps there's a reason for that, right?
