City Under Siege by

Blurb:

London is a city in flames. Tensions are high and a critical situation is about to go from bad to worse. The Prime Minister wants to send a message, and the SAS will be the ones to deliver it.

Emotional detachment is my speciality. I’m ruthless and cut throat, but there is nobody better.

Sarah Tatem is an innocent. Caught up in a world in which she doesn’t belong, and trying desperately to do the right thing. My job is to keep her safe long enough to get what’s needed, and bring an end to this siege of terror.

But something has changed. I’ve learned that the only thing stronger than loyalty is love, and now she’s gone.

My name is Lieutenant Tom Harper, and I’m about to unleash hell.

Captivating, thrilling and, yes, even romantic till the end!

Once I had started reading, I just couldn't stop till the last page was turned.

Being there to see Sarah abnd Tom get their "forever" against all odds, was a rough ride on an emotional roller coaster - bit it was so worth it! So worth all the tears and sniffles, so worth the goofy grins, so worth all the worry and fear  for "my" hero and "my" heroine.
You can feel the chemistry right from the start, it's not just sparks but fireworks with a cozy promise of forever.

Sarah and Tom are amazing characters who I'd love to call friends in RL. Honest, courageous, and absolutely loyal, they do what is right no matter what it might cost them.
Okay, they mostly do what is right but there might be a slight bending of those rules on Tom's side when it comes to Sarah and his interactions with her.

Add a gripping and well-plotted storyline, an intense and captivating style and you'll understand why this was my first book by R.J. Prescott but definitely not the last!

The Penthouse Pact (The Bachelor Pact #1) by Cathryn Fox

Blurb:

Billionaire software developer Parker Braxton knows everyone wants something from him. That's why he made a multi-million-dollar bachelor pact with his friends to never marry. But he never counted on running into, literally, the quiet but sensual Layla Fallon.

Layla isn't afraid of hard work. Still, there is no light at the end of her student-loan tunnel. When Stuck-Up Suit—Parker Braxton—accidentally runs her over, it's the last things she needs. She refuses his help, but he's persistent. He’s also handsome, kinder than she ever expected, and she’s doing her best to ignore her attraction. Which is harder than it sounds when she’s recuperating at his penthouse.

Sparks fly. Hearts flutter. But falling for Layla could cost Parker more than just several million dollars.

It started with a bang...okay, something like that. In his haste to reach the hospital where his mother was brought to, Parker is distracted and ...runs Layla over.  Literally. He hits her with his car. Afterwards, he takes her back home to his place to take care of her and make sure that she is well. I mean, at least as well as you can be with a concussion and all.

Things develop rather quickly from there. There may or may not be a fake engagement involved as well as cookies, coats and ...well...a bunch of friends who agreed to never marry.
When your own demons collide with your feelings, it isn't always easy to do the right thing - and it gets even more difficult when life puts some spokes in your wheel.

Stuck-up-suit Parker and Layla are a wonderful couple. You realize from the first why Parker is drawn to her despite his reservations and convictions and Layla, well, who could resist a guy who is so charming and so determined to do the right things. Layla is sweet and you just have to love her so it is easy to see why Parker falls for her.

This is one of those books that won't necessarily stay with you after you have closed the book but it is a very nice and very charming book that I really enjoyed reading. If you are looking for sweet and nice, this is the book of your choice!

Immortal Sleepers: Blood Awakening (Immortal Sleepers #1) by Miranda Nichols

Blurb:

A war has been brewing in the shadows.

Kaelyn Hamblin never felt particularly extraordinary, growing up in a strong Irish household in the heart of Boston for most of her young life. Her humdrum routine remained markedly unchanged for longer than she cared to remember; until that day. The day when a beautiful stranger drifted into her hole-in-the-wall bookshop and changed her life forever.

Tyrian knew from the moment he locked eyes on her that she was the one. His one. The singular being within all of time and space that was made for him and him alone. His world was not one of niceties and pretty things; bringing her into it would be dangerous. But he would protect her. He had to. After all, it was foretold.

Worlds collide, marking the beginning of the end to an age long battle warring between the forces of darkness and light in the universe. The fate of all rests on the shoulders of a lone druid and her band of human hunters to quell the rising tide of evil threatening to overtake everything and plunge the connected realms into eternal darkness.

This book left me a bit at a loss because I honestly don't know how to rate it. I really love the story and the world the author creates but despite that the book couldn't fully captivate me. The story was unique and interesting but lacking depth. Even though the characters seemed nice and all, I couldn't feel with them or get really interested in their fate.

Their romantic involvement left me at a loss as well. The words were right but I couldn't feel their connection and sometimes it felt as if the intensity of the heroe's attentions was too much and bordering on overwhelming to "not right". The heroine, Kaelyn didn't feel that way but I couldn't feel their passion - and there was a lot of love action that led to me being mildly interested or downright skipping passages.

Wonderful characters, a great story in an interesting and complex world - the potential is there and I might check out other books by the author because with more depth this book could be amazing. At the moment it feels as if the authors tells her story but doesn't get involved in it. It doesn't draw me in yet but there were glimpses of it that left me wanting more. Overall, this book is promising and I am looking forward to find out what time and further books will bring.

Heart of the Wolf (Heart of the Wolf #1) by Terry Spear

Just a short impression...

Blurb:

Their forbidden love may get them both killed. Bella is a red werewolf, sole survivor of the fire that killed her entire pack. Devlyn is a beta male werewolf in a pack of grays. Forced to flee her adopted gray pack when the alpha male becomes a vicious threat, she struggles to live as a lone wolf, until Devlyn, the gray male who rescued her as a pup, comes to bring her home.

When a local red werewolf goes on a killing spree, Bella and Devlyn must flee the murderer, the police and their vengeful pack leader. With the full moon rising, and her heat upon her, Bella can't resist the pull to her destined mate, even if means Devlyn will have to face the wicked alpha male in a fight to the death...

I've read several books by Terry Spear already and loved all of them. Heart of the Wolf was another book that I really enjoyed even though it couldn't hold my interest as well as the other books.
The story itself was nice and well-written as usual but I found myself tempted to skip parts because I was missing some chemistry and sometimes it felt a bit repetitive. Usually, with a book by Terry Spear, I must take care that I put it aside to do other things because somehow my kindle tends to be glued to my fingers when I read her books but somehow I didn't have a problem to put The Heart of the Wolf to the side to do other things.
It is a nice story and overall it is still a good book but I like other books by the author much better.

Mating Games by Nikki Jefford #MatingGames

Blurb:

 A FEMALE GUARDING HER HEART . . .

Hot-tempered, agile, and jaded, Jordan spurns the match her father is pushing between her and the swaggering mammoth, Raider. She'd happily let one of her fawning sisters have him, but her packmates are taking bets on who Raider will ultimately claim. Jordan wants nothing to do with the insufferable beast . . . until he saves her life.

A MALE CARRYING THE WEIGHT OF HIS PACK . . .

All brawn and no brains, that's what most male shifters think when they see Raider. The females treat him as a strong, attractive prize they want to sink their claws into. Only one female avoids him, which is fine with him until they are paired up for patrol. The hot-blooded she-wolf doesn't have to like him, but she'll have to find a way to perform her duties.

ENTANGLED IN A WEB OF DECEIT . . . AND DESIRE

When Jordan’s life is threatened, along with several packmates, the mating games take a dangerous turn.

Something sinister is happening in Wolf Hollow and outside forces threaten the impassioned bond forming between two shifters fated to be together.

It did take me a bit longer to get into it again and I needed some time to sort through the characters in order to find out who was who and what was his or her role in the story. It would definitely have been better if I had re-read Wolf Hollow before starting on Mating Games.

Once I got into the story again, I really loved it. I loved the characters and the story even though some parts seemed a bit drawn out but that might also have been my impatience for Raider and especially Jordan to finally accknowledgewhat I already knew.

This new world, built on the remnants of the old one, is no safe place to be, not even for someone as strong as our shifters of Wolf Hollow and not always does the threat come from the outside but sometimes also from inside of the Hollow and the members of its pack.

While Jordan and Raider try to sort out their feelings, they not only have to fight off their enemies but they also have to fight against their pack's exectations and some potential mates who have a problem with the concept of the word "no" or "I'm not interested".
I loved Jordan and Raider. Raider is much more than people give him credit for and Jordan, well, the more you get to know her, the more you have to love her.

This book and its story keep you on your toes. It is fast-paced, sweet and sexy and will keep you glued to your reader till the end.

Fated (Relentless #6) by Karen Lynch

Blurb:

Christian Kent has many labels – warrior, protector, friend, lover – but the one label he never wanted was mate. In his lifetime, the only girl he has ever loved, was the one he couldn’t have. He left her to protect her heart, but his own will always belong to her.

As a girl, the one person she believed would never hurt her broke her heart. Now a warrior, she’s loving life and living for the next adventure. She’s put the past behind her, including the man who walked out of her life.

Fate brought them together once, and it’s not done with them yet. When they are suddenly thrown together to battle a lethal new foe, sparks fly and old feelings resurface. Chris will have to work hard to heal the rift between them. But will she be able to let go of the old heartbreak and open her heart to him again? Can they come together before the threat they are facing tears them apart forever?

** This book is considered Upper YA due to some mature content.

Finally! Finally the book is here, the one that we've all been waiting for ever since Chris, or rather "Dimples", has been laughing about Nikolas and his somewhat rocky start with Sara. Famous last words indeed...
Somehow it seems as if Chris never expected this bonding and mating thing to be so very difficult even though Nikolas and Sara should have been proof enough that finding and claiming your mate is not always just a question of rainbows and unicorns.

When Chris finally realizes that this is it, this girl is his mate, well, his potential mate, he also realozes that no matter how stormy the ride, this might just be the one girl that he can't walk away from. Oh, and Nikolas might be in for some popcorn and fun along the way.

I should say that I really really love this series. From the first page of the first book I was hooked and with each book that came out, I loved this series even more. Each and every one of those books drew me in from the moment I opened it. I laughed (a lot) with the characters, I cheered them on, I was worried, I cried, I was upset and furious and I loved every single minute of it. Soooo.... Fated was long anticipated and I had certain expectations and hopes - and I wasn't disappointed. This was once again a book that I never put down till the last page, but literally read even while walking around with my e-reader in hand.

I had been waiting for Chris' story and I wanted someone for him who would be his match and who would lead him on a merry chase. His mate is all that and so much more. I fell in love with this character right from the start and it just felt right. Those two belong together and I had a lot of fun (and nail-biting suspense) following their bumpy way towards this goal.

Apart from the wonderful love story which would have been reason enough to love this book, it has a new twist and explores the amazing world of Sara and her friends further.  As with the other books in this series, the complex and unique plot, the amazing writing and the wonderful characters of Fated, create one of those books that draw you in and in which you lose yourself for hours.

The Viking's Chosen by Quinn Loftis #TheVikingsChosen

Blurb:
His orders are clear: launch a raid against England and bring home the spoils of war. But the prophecy is also clear: General Torben will take a foreign bride—one who is a seer and healer just like his mother. The eldest princess of England is said to be just that…a beautiful, charming, and headstrong woman. But he's a Viking army general and she's an English princess—and one who is already promised to the king of Tara.

Two worlds collide in this epic historical fiction centered on an undeniable chemistry that smolders against the odds. Richly written and injected with moments of humor, this action-packed romantic tale will leave you breathless.
Alright, I must admit that very often Viking stories and I, well, let's just say that we don't mix well, as they tend to be rather brutal and I might have a problem with that high level of brutality. In this case though, I fell for the cobination of the author, the cover and the blurb and couldn't resist. After pushing it around a bit and starting, not really starting to read it, I finally put on my big girl panties and started. And didn't stop till the end.

There were some minor things that did strike me as not being completely conclusive but on the whole I really really enjoyed reading this book. Strong, feisty women, really bad villains (even though those tend to be mad as well) and strong, protective men who respect their women and don't smother them.
The chemistry between our hero Torben, the Viking and Princess Allete Auvray is convincing and you can feel that they belong together and not just because Cathal, her betrothed is a cruel brute. The villains like Cathal and the Viking King Magnus are defined by their brutality and their cruelty, there's nothing subtile or complex about them, the other characters are more complex though and I really loved all the dynamics. I laughed and chuckled a lot, giggled, was upset and laughed again.

A fast-paced story about love and magic and...love....of course and...a cliffhanger. If you are like me, you might want to wait a bit till at least the next book, The Viking's Captive is out because otherwise you might feel (like me) that November is simply too far away for the story to continue especially considering the circumstances in which we find our friends at the end of this book - but no matter what, read this book, it is definitely worth it!

Dangerous Witness (Redemption Harbor Series #3) by Katie Reus #DangerousWitness #NetGalley

Blurb:

He foolishly let her go…
When the woman he loved walked out of his life, Brooks Alexander was certain she did so willingly—with the cool two-million his father had offered as incentive to walk away. So when he learns that Darcy didn’t take a dime of his father’s payoff, Brooks realizes he made an epic mistake. He’s determined to make things right and reclaim his woman. Except neither task is as easily accomplished as he first thought.

Now her life is in his hands…
Wedding planner Darcy is no stranger to disappointment when it comes to the men in her life. When Brooks accused her of taking his father’s bribe, she was devastated that he thought so little of her—and realized he never knew her at all. So she walked away with her pride intact and her heart broken. Now, months later, an overheard conversation puts Darcy in the crosshairs of a dangerous criminal with powerful connections. With nowhere else to turn, she has no choice but to put all her trust in Redemption Harbor Consulting—and its cofounder, the man who broke her heart.

This third book in the Redemption Harbor Series by Katie Reus was another one of those books that I had been waiting for because the other books in this series were so good and I just had to know more about all those people that I have come to care for.
Meeting Skye and Colt again as well as Olivia, her sweet little daughter and her partner Savage and all their friends was great and I really enjoyed finding out more about Brooks as well.

Brooks and Darcy are an amazing couple even though I was sometimes a bit frustrated that it took them so long to trust again but, well, the important bit is that in the end they get there, right?
Fast-paced and captivating, this book had me hooked from the beginning and well, at the end of this book ....I needed more. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series because they are not only well-written and well-plotted but also captivating and thrilling.
Definitely another book that I can wholeheartedly recommend to all those readers who love a well-written romantic suspense.

Touch of Ice (Dawn of Dragons #1) by Mary Auclair

Blurb:

He is as cold as ice. She is the salvation that will melt his heart.

When Endora is faced with her daughter’s terminal illness, she takes the only chance she’s got. She braves the potential risks and signs a mating contract with the Delradon Draekon Lords, intent on using the payment to buy the aliens’ cure to save her daughter’s life.

Lord Aldric Darragon rules over his land with an iron fist until one day the only woman who is genetically compatible with him agrees to his offer of mating. As his all-consuming passion for Endora explodes, an ancient threat looms heavy over humans and Delradons alike. With the lives of everyone he cares about hanging in the balance, Aldric has to fight the demons of his past if he wants to defeat the enemies of the present.

Publisher’s Note: This gripping sci-fi alien romance has it all: dragons, passion and tension. It also contains explicit themes and is intended for adults only.

Okay, I must admit that I wasn't sure whether I should read this book or not because - aliens. But - dragons. You see? I was a bit torn but then the dragon part won and I started reading. And read. And read. Aaaaand...read.
I really enjoyed reading this book! A unique story, well-spun and captivating with wonderful characters.

Lord Aldric Darragon was a bit too bossy but hey, he is important right, so it's probably okay, that he behaves that way especially as he is a bit tense due to all this falling in lust (or even love?) and such stuff. Endora, on the other hand, knows exactly what he wants - protect her young (and dying) daughter no matter what.
Both of them dance to their own tune and fail to trust the other one which might just be their downfall. Or will they start to trust each other soon enough to prevent the catastrophe?

Very lovable characters and an interesting story, I can definitely recommend this book!

Release Day Blitz and Review: Bad Wolf by Jo Raven

Another amazing new book by JO RAVEN!

Who is afraid of the big ...

 Blurb:

This is no fairytale…
Once I fell in love with a gorgeous boy next door.
Years later, he’s back—a total hunk, hot as hell, and bad. So bad.
Rude. Arrogant. Hard.
And I’m dying for a taste.

Jarett was our neighbors’ adopted son.
Handsome, strong, quiet, he was my protector, and my friend.
Now he’s back, and he’s still gorgeous.
Tall, dark and s*xy. All man.
But he’s a bad guy, moving with a dangerous crowd.
So why do I keep winding up in his arms?
On his lap. In his bed.
I know better than this—I’m better than this. I should stop.
Only my heart tells me there’s good inside Jarett.
That I could save him.
Then again, what happens to gullible girls who climb into bed with the big bad wolf?
…Right.

Jo Raven is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, best known for her series Inked Brotherhood and Damage Control. She writes edgy, contemporary New Adult romance with sexy bad boys and strong-willed heroines. She writes about MME fighters and tattoo artists, dark pasts that bleed into the present, loyalty and raw emotion. Add to that breathtaking suspense, super-hot sex scenes and a happy ending, and you have a Jo Raven® story.

I've read quite a number of books by Jo Raven up to now and loved each and every one of them. They are intense, the characters are flawed and far from perfect, authentic and real.

The Bad Wolf is another one of those amazing books, that draw you in and don't let you go till the end. Jarrett, our hero, definitely has been dealt a bad hand by fate. Not only has everyone died who meant anything to him but he also has to deal with his foster brother who he is trying to protect. How do you protect someone who is his own worst enemy? Things get dark but somehow Gigi, our heroine who has been carrying a torch for him ever since they were kids, still sees some good in him. Deep down.

Over and over Jarrett proves that he may be a bad boy but that he has a good heart but will that be enough when the real bad part of his life comes calling? Torn between his love for Gigi and his promise to protect his brother, Jarrett will soon have to find out where his alliances lie - and how he can free himself from a life that he doesn't want.

Even though I understood why Jarrett acts the ways he does it drove me crazy every time he made the wrong decision, every time he chose the wrong people.... up until it is too late. Maybe.

I loved those characters a lot. Jarrett is an amazing character, you can feel his dilemma, you can feel how much he cares for those around him and how much he wishes for his life to change and despite that, you still understand why he acts the way he does.
Gigi on the other hand is tough, but also sweet and caring, she loves the bad boy and trusts him but she isn't naive about it. She doesn't believe that love will conquer all and unicorns will rule the world but she doesn't give up hope.

And her family, wow, they are a wonderful! This is what family is about, you care for your family and you help them, you are there for them but it is mutual and implies respect and love for the others. This close knit family is a sharp contrast to the family Jarrett has.
This is about loving someone and believing in him, about trust and respect and being there for each other and it is also about those who don't have it and those who sacrifice their own life for someone else.  Love, family and friendship and the ability to believe in someone will change Jarrett's life...will they?

I loved this book! Just, well, if you mind strong language this book is not meant for you but if you don't have a problem with it, well, go ahead, read it, it's amazing!

By the book by Julia Sonneborn

Blurb:

An English professor struggling for tenure discovers that her ex-fiancé has just become the president of her college—and her new boss—in this whip-smart modern retelling of Jane Austen’s classic Persuasion.

Anne Corey is about to get schooled.

An English professor in California, she’s determined to score a position on the coveted tenure track at her college. All she’s got to do is get a book deal, snag a promotion, and boom! She’s in. But then Adam Martinez—her first love and ex-fiancé—shows up as the college’s new president.

Anne should be able to keep herself distracted. After all, she’s got a book to write, an aging father to take care of, and a new romance developing with the college’s insanely hot writer-in-residence. But no matter where she turns, there’s Adam, as smart and sexy as ever. As the school year advances and her long-buried feelings begin to resurface, Anne begins to wonder whether she just might get a second chance at love.

Funny, smart, and full of heart, this modern ode to Jane Austen’s classic explores what happens when we run into the demons of our past...and when they turn out not to be so bad, after all.

I cried, I laughed, I giggled and I was anxious to find out what would happen next. Even though it was a retelling of Persuasion, not everything was foreseeable and I loved to find out what would happen next and believe me, I enjoyed every single page in this book. This is definitely a book that I  will also buy in print in addition to the ebook because I simply loved it.

It was fun, it was modern and it wasn't afraid to touch rather sensitive issues like the fact of someone being successful despite initially being an undocumented citizen as well as affairs, the loss of loved ones, plagiarism and the choices in life that we make due to love.
A wide range of subjects to think about, a wonderful retelling of one of my favorite stories (by the way, guess which book is the favorite book of our heroine?) and, of course, books. It's not just about love and people, even though they make up a big part of the story, of course, but it is also about books and the love for books and words.

I loved to see how Anne and Adam's paths crossed again and again and even though they seemed to have moved on you felt (well, and knew of course, I mean, it is a retelling of Persuasion, right?) that there still were some feelings left and hoped for those feelings to blossom. Soon.
The end was, well, on the one hand, it was a bit sudden but on the other hand, all of it had been at least thirteen years in the making, so I didn't really think about it being too soon but just took out my hankie and cried a little bit because it was so beautiful (and I might be a bit sentimental and of course, it was this irresistible combination of books and love - who wouldn't cry?).

Oh, and I loved those amazing characters. Be it Larry or Jack (oh, my... Jack and his questions concerning Jane Eyre almost killed me... ), Anne, Pam, Tiffany or any of the others - they were great, vivacious and I could totally imagine them when I was reading about them. What I loved about Adam was that he reminded me a lot of the original Captain Wentworth with his rather aloof manner. You can guess, you think you know what he feels but you never really know because he is always a bit distant and bit reserved - at least that's what it looks like on the outside.

An amazing book that made me google things like "Jane Vampire", half expecting to find a movie in the making and checking out the works of e.e.cummings as well as those of nineteenth-century women writers and - well, the emojis in my messenger. I mean, who knows when a combination like 🌭 and ✂️ might come in handy....

Living Out Loud by Staci Hart - Release Day Blitz/Review

an all-new emotional standalone from Staci Hart is LIVE!

Blurb:

Bestselling author Staci Hart brings you another installment of the Austen Series, inspired by the works of Jane Austen, with a heartfelt contemporary retelling of Sense and Sensibility.

When Annie Daschle arrives in New York City, the only thing she can control is her list.

Not her father’s death or the loss of her home. Not the hole in her heart or the defective valve that’s dictated so much of her life. But she can put pen to paper to make a list of all the ways she can live out loud, just like her dad would have wanted.

See the city from the top of the Empire State Building: Check.
Eat hot dogs on the steps of The Met: Check.
Get a job at Wasted Words: Check.

What wasn’t on her list: Greg Brandon. And just when she thinks she’s figured out where to put him, everything changes. In the span of a few staggering heartbeats, she finds herself her caught in the middle of something she can’t find her way out of, with no clear answers and no rules.

List or no list, she realizes she can’t control anything at all, not even her heart.

Not the decisions it makes, and not the moment it stops.

Wow, this book simply blew my mind. It is one of those books that stay with you long after you have read the last page.

Annie, our heroine may be physically weak but on the inside she is strong. It is amazing to see how she blossoms and even though you want to pinch her sometimes and ask her whether she really, really doesn't understand...well....understand, most of the time I was just smiling goofily and was humbled by her strength and her ability to deal with the rather shitty cards dealt to her by life. You totally understand the protectiveness of those around her because even though you understand her need to prove to herself and the others that she can do things, that she can live, you are afraid for her.

At first sight, Greg may not look like the perfect hero to our heroine but despite that, you feel the sparks, you feel their connection and when everything changes and things become ... difficult (remember Sense and Sensibility...) you just want to scream. I loved him even more then than before because it becomes clear that Annie's happiness and her wellbeing are the only thing that really matters to him. Even if that would mean that he can't be with her.

When things get really rough it is Greg who is there for her - will that be enough to convince Annie that he is the right one for her?

I loved A Thousand Letters and I loved A Little Too Late but this book topped them both. Annie and her strength, her resilience in the face of her open heart and her father's death, Greg, who is always there when he is needed, who is always the one to rely on, those two very quickly found their way into my heart.
Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! This book is simply amazing and I can't wait till Elle's book The Sound of Silence comes out!
