Blurb:
Seren Pendragon has been praised for her gentility, and yet, deep down, she is anything but serene. Her mother is a witch, her sisters are in peril, and she is promised to a beast of a man who has already purportedly murdered one king. When she and her sister find a chance to escape Morwen’s clutches, they seize it, but neither realizes how much their struggle will change the fates. Alas, it will take a terrible tragedy to unleash Seren’s inner fire.
The Bastard Butcher of Warkworth is no stranger to misfortune. All he held dear vanished one night in a wisp of smoke, and he has been scarred by his encounters with Morwen Pendragon—both mentally and physically. But, when one of the Witch’s daughters finds herself in need, Will must find the champion within and ride to her rescue.
I really enjoyed the other books in this series with their mystic and fascinating story and this book is no exception. Okay, a couple of pages in, I was devastated, thoroughly and completely, handkerchief-wielding and cry-my-eyes-out devastated, so trust me, this book is not for the faint of heart. Its magik is not about unicorns and rainbows but it is about the fight against the dark and the evil, with Morwen, our heroine's mother being the incarnation of everything evil and cruel. Seren and her sisters are not only fighting for their very lives and their happiness but also for their country and its people while trying to find their own destiny - and maybe even love.
This book is another captivating mix of historical facts and characters spiced with a healthy dose of magik and mysticism. It's a fast-paced, imaginative and intriguing story that slowly unfolds while every sister has her own story, well, almost every sister. This book is the story of Seren Pendragon and Wilhelm Fitz Richard.
Wilhelm was sent by their sister Rosalynde to retrieve Arwen and Seren who were separated from their sisters and are currently waiting on a ship always in fear of being discovered by their mother and her minions. He is supposed to deliver them to Rosalynde who is anxiously waiting for them. When a blow of fate changes the sisters' lives forever, he will have to convince Seren that he is not her enemy but might even become her champion. While Seren and Wilhelm travel towards Warkworth where they are supposed to meet Rosalynde, well, this thing about a champion? It might come true. And even better - those two fall in love. Deeply and irrevocably.
Once again another great book in this series, I am already looking forward to the next and final book!
