How to Forgive a Highlander (The MacGregor Lairds #4) by Michelle McLean

The story:
William MacGregor will lie, spy, and happily die to protect his clan from their greatest enemy. But when he kidnaps the wrong woman, he triggers the very events he’d been working so hard to prevent. And puts everyone in danger.

Rose Thatcher will do anything to protect her lady and return them both safely to English soil. But the damn Highlander who snatched her off the docks has done nothing but get in her way. She’d love to ditch the bastard, but if they want to save their respective loved ones, they are going to have to stay together.

Somewhere along the grueling journey to Scotland, their constant bickering turns into something more. Something worth fighting for. But how can an English lady’s maid, who longs for the safe, comfortable life she had in London, find love with a Highlander who can’t wait to wipe England’s dust off his feet? If they can’t defeat the enemy they accidentally led home, they might not live long enough to find out.

This was a sweet and charming book with lots of action, an adorable and charming couple whose bickering and nagging made me smile and laugh a lot. The characters felt authentic and genuine and even though I was upset that William was really hard on himself while I thought that he was simply human, I really loved those two.
Rose is something else, strong, loving, funny and loyal to the core. I loved to see her slowly (and thoroughly) fall for William and vice versa.

Towards the end, when those two to have to figure out how they can overcome the problems that keep them from acknowledging their feelings or at least from daring to hope for a future because - how could they dream of a future together if one of them is supposed to live in Scotland and the other one in England?
But having overcome everything they did - how could they give up these dreams?

I didn't know the other books in this series but I had no problem to get into this one and to stay captivated till the end. Now I'm really looking forward to reading the other books in this series even though Rose and William were rather special and I'm not sure that the others will be as sweet as those two but I really hope so.

His Highland Surprise (The Clan Sinclair Book 5) by Celeste Barclay

Blurb:

A confirmed bachelor with no intentions of settling down...

Tavish Sinclair cannot imagine life with only one woman, not when so many catch his eye.  As the third son of Laird Liam Sinclair, he has two older brothers and their children ahead of him for the lairdship.  Tavish is stunned when his father informs him the king has arranged his marriage to a woman from the most notorious clan in Scotland, and one he has never met.  Drawn as much to her intelligence as her looks, Tavish is unprepared for his spunky bride-to-be when she goes toe to toe and head to head with him at every turn.  Can he protect Ceit from herself as much as the dangers that lurk at court?

A spirited lady-in-waiting with no plans to change...

Ceit Comyn is the niece of one John Comyn and the cousin of the other, making her a member of the most despised clan in the country.  Sent to the royal court as a peace offering to mend torched bridges, Ceit is forced in the king's services just as her uncle would control her for the same purposes.  She has no interest in marrying a rogue, but when the kind-hearted and honorable warrior champions her, she may discover he's more saint than sinner.

Meet the members of Clan Sinclair in this fifth installment of the five book Highland romance series.  The Clan Sinclair features Mairghread and her four brothers, Callum, Alexander, Tavish, and Magnus.  Each member of the Scottish clan faces challenges as they meet their fated match, but all of the Sinclairs find their HEA.  Each novel in the series is a standalone, but they are best read together.

I was a bit torn and it took me some time to decide how to rate this book because on the one hand I enjoyed reading this story and I liked the characters but on the other hand there was a lot of introspection going on, especially in the mind of our hero.

All these thoughts, written in the first person in the middle of the story told in the third person, felt a bit strange. I often have problems with stories told in the first person, so this perspective combined with the musings and sentiments conveyed in these parts was a bit too much for my taste. Those parts just sounded a bit off for me.

Apart from that I enjoyed the story on the whole. There was a lot of spying and counterspying going on and people being used for someone else's gain. Fast-paced, with many many twists and turns, the story was entertaining and nice to read.

I haven't read any other books by Celeste Barclay yet and I'm not sure if I will try to do so because after a while I always had to put the book down and read something different before I could go on. I was tempted to skip pages but this was an ARC so I didn't want to cheat. If you loved the other books in this series, you will love this one as well though.

Highland Wolf (Murray Family #15) by Hannah Howell

Blurb:

New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell returns to the breathtaking Scottish Highlands with the unforgettable Murray clan, and the stunning Annora MacKay who cannot resist the desire an alluring stranger offers . . .

Annora MacKay senses a disturbing evil in Dunncraig Keep, the estate acquired by her cousin, a cruel and ruthless man. Only her affection for the tiny girl he claims is his daughter stops her from fleeing. Then a mysterious woodcarver arrives at the castle, and she cannot stop thinking--or longing--for him . . .

James Drummond, once a laird, now an outcast, wants what was stolen from him--his good name, his lands, and his child. His disguise for getting into Dunncraig is step one of his plan, but the enticing raven-haired woman who cares for his daughter is an unwelcome surprise. For he has come seeking justice, not love . . .

Wow, another amazing book by Hannah Howell! Once again this book drew me in from the first page on to the very last. I was in for a rollercoaster of emotions, being upset, swooning, crying, being scared and - so much more.

Annora and James were a wonderful couple and when I wasn't fearing for their lives or their health or...everything else, I was cheering them on and hoping for them to find love and happiness. Both of them were much in need of both. With Donnell MacKay and his ruthless hold on the keep that he stole from James years ago set against them, with his cruelty towards each and every one who speaks up against him, things start to get really tough, especially when Donnell's man Egan joins the party and wants to marry Annora...whetehr she wants him or not.
James has been on the run for years but with his daughter and his love's lives and happiness at stake, he can't lose, he has to win back his keep and clear his name!

An amazing story, captivating and brilliantly told, Highland Wolf is definitely one of those books that I'll read again from time to time - like most of the books by the author, actually. I haven't found a book by her that I didn't love. This book is a stand-alone even though it is part of a series. You don't have to read the other books in this series in order to understand it but you'll probably end up reading them anyway because they are just so good.

Highlander Most Wanted (The Montgomerys and Armstrongs #2) by Maya Banks

Blurb:

In Highlander Most Wanted, a reclusive woman content to live in the shadows shows a Highland warrior the true meaning of love.

Genevieve McInnes is locked behind the fortified walls of McHugh Keep, captive of a cruel laird who takes great pleasure in ruining her for any other man. Yet when Bowen Montgomery storms the gates on a mission of clan warfare, Genevieve finds that her spirit is bent but not broken. Still, her path toward freedom remains uncertain. Unable to bear the shame of returning to a family that believes her dead or to abandon others at the keep to an imposing new laird, Genevieve opts for the peaceful life of an abbess. But Bowen’s rugged sensuality stirs something deep inside her that longs to be awakened by his patient, gentle caress—something warm, wicked, and tempting.

Bowen seizes his enemy’s keep, unprepared for the brooding and reclusive woman who captures his heart. He’s enchanted by her fierce determination, her unusual beauty, and her quiet, unfailing strength. But wooing her will take more than a seasoned seducer’s skill. For loving Genevieve, he discovers, means giving her back the freedom that was stolen from her—even if it means losing her forever.

I love all the Highlander books by Maya Banks but I must admit that Geneviève and Bowen very quickly won my heart completely and absolutely. Geneviève and her fate made me really mad and when Bowen was there to stand up for her, when he became her champion...sigh. Those two are a wonderful couple. Their way to each other is not easy and knowing what I knew about her life with the McHughs, I was furious when Bowen misjudged Geneviève at the beginning but I soon forgave him.

I loved the story and the characters a lot and didn't put the book down once I had started reading it. This was one of those "one more chapter" books that draw you in and don't let you go till the end.
Despite the fact that some things like the hatred and the actions of the McHughs seem a bit overdone and a bit too much to be completely convincing, I loved the whole atmosphere and the characters so much that I just didn't care.

A heartwarming and sweet story with a strong and resilient heroine and her future partner, despicable villains and a well-plotted story with some twists and turns and lots of suspense - I loved this book and can't wait to read the next book in this series!

The King's Favorite (Daughters of Avalon, #1) by Tanya Anne Crosby

Blurb:
It has been five years since King Stephen took the English throne. The border lands are fraught with tensions. Loyalties are uncertain. Only the strong will hold their lands, and behind every strong man is an even stronger woman.

The eldest of five daughters born to King Henry's mistress, Elspeth fears she and her sisters will be used as pawns in the wars to come. When her sisters are wrenched from the Blak Montayne Priory that has sheltered them since Henry's death, Elspeth alone escapes, only to find herself indebted to, of all men, a Scotsman, whose loyalties are in question…

Left to face the wrath of a new sovereign, Malcolm MacKinnon has sworn his fealty to Stephen of Blois in order to keep the demesne he won by slaying his grandfather. In doing so, he has pit himself against Scotland, and even his own father. Even as he realizes there is no turning back, his bartered bride may offer him a chance to atone. But will giving in to his passion bring nations to war?

Okay, I can't say that I didn't put the book down because I did. For several days. Honestly? A couple of pages in, my heart was broken. I was so upset about the things that I read there about sweet little Malcolm (at least, once upon a time in another book he was sweet and little), that it took me some days to get over it and read on. And then I barely put it down anymore because it was so good!

What I really love about the books by this author, is her manner of weaving a story by combining historical facts with a brilliant and captivating story, lots of romance and a healthy dose of myth. I loved the vivid picture of a country torn by war and conflicting loyalties, of people having to face their own kin on the battlefield and I also loved the amazing and unique characters and their story. Elspeth and her sisters soon found a place in my heart and I felt with them but also feared for them and wondered about their mother's ruthlessness and her power. Especially her power. Her mother was set apart, not only by her actions and her thoughts but also because she was the only one whose part is told in the first person. Immediately, every time you stumble upon her parts, you are on guard and fear what new atrocities will be revealed. Along with our hero and our heroine, you learn to hate and to fear Morwen - and this was just the beginning.

I loved how Malcolm and Elspeth fell for each other. Despite the sudden and definitely quick manner of their...well...kind-of-not-really-courtship, you can feel that those two belong together and that they care a lot for each other. Elspeth is so sweet and Malcolm's devotion to her and his calm acceptance of her uniqueness and her power are simply amazing.

Such a beautiful and amazing book, I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

Sweet Home Highlander (Tartans and Titans #1) by Amalie Howard & Angie Morgan

Blurb:

Lady Aisla Montgomery has a perfectly tolerable marriage...as long as her husband stays in Scotland and she in Paris. But now, years later, she wants only one thing—a divorce.

Niall Stuart Maclaren, the rugged Laird of Tarbendale rues the day he met his beautiful, conniving wife. Though the thought of her incites a bitter and biting fury, no other woman has ever stirred his blood as hotly. When Aisla returns to Scotland to sever ties, Niall agrees on one condition—one week with him for every year of desertion. Six weeks as his wife in his castle...in his bed...in exchange for her freedom.

I really wanted Niall and Aisla to get back together because it is so very obvious that those two are in love despite everything that happened between them and I must admit that their lack of communication or sometimes even their malcommunication made me a bit mad. Fortunately, before they really made me mad, they started to talk and ...well.

This book pulled me in and kept me reading despite their lack of proper communication. I loved Niall and Aisla and hated those that tried to tear them apart - again. Actually, I really didn't understand that Niall didn't see any of that (okay, he is a man, so probably that explains it all).  I also loved most of the minor characters and I can't wait to read Makenna's story which will hopefully follow (very) soon!
Back to Niall and Aisla though. This heartwarming and heart-breaking second chance story was written beautifully and comes along with lots of treachery, misunderstandings and pure viciousness which were perfectly balanced by true love, friendship and loyalty. A really nice story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I am already looking forward to the next book in this new series!

(One thing though - I was a bit upset because despite the fact that we read very often about the devastating effect that alcohol had on Niall's character (even tough he himself doesn't really acknowledge it despite the fact that he never drinks anymore), he smells is and tasts it again without any effect. He even prides himself because of his strong character that would allow him to never really drink again, a sip or a glass would be okay, though. Okay, I know that in those times people didn't know anything about it but I know that it is not that easy to drink "just one glass" or "just one sip" if you have been addicted to alcohol and honestly, as often as he was seriously drunk, as much as he destroyed by his drinking, I consider him a former addict - and I wouldn't let him near any alcohol because the danger of a relapse is always there. I know, that has nothing to do with the book itself but having met quite a number of former addicts in my life, it feels wrong to accept that Niall just drinks - or not - without any danger of a relapse.)

Betting the Scot (The Highlanders of Balforss #2) by Jennifer Trethewey

Blurb:

Declan Sinclair is a Highlander who believes his dreams never lie. When he spots Caya at a public house, he knows instantly she is the woman in his dreams—his future wife. Though her brother had promised never to gamble again, he engages Declan in a card game—and the prize is the lovely Caya.

Caya Pendarvis has no time for childish things like dreams or fairy-tales or love. She’s the sacrificial lamb on her way to the far north of Scotland to wed a wealthy merchant in exchange for settling her brother’s gambling debts.

Winning at cards is one of the many things Declan Sinclair does well. Unfortunately, the ability to court a woman—a talent he lacks—is the only skill he desperately needs to win Caya’s heart.

This story was nice to read but on the whole the characters, as well as the story, were lacking some depths. The description sounded promising but it often felt as if some unnecessary obstacles were put up just for the sake of prolonging the story. A bit more depth and a faster development of the story would have been appreciated.

I liked the story but I really had a problem to understand why Declan still has to court Caya or better, why this whole curting has to be so very difficult. It really doesn't make much sense in my eyes. Okay, right, I know why his uncle thinks that things should go that way but considering all circumstances I can't understand it.

Despite all that it is a nice and entertaining story.

When a Warrior Woos a Lass (Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts #6) by Julie Johnstone

Blurb:

The past haunts them. Treachery awaits them. Love will save them.

A shattered lass…

Scarred by the cruel whims of her late husband, Lena MacLeod lives in fear of men and marriage. So when the king’s edict obliges her to wed Scottish warrior Alex MacLean, she never expects to feel safe, let alone happy. But behind Alex’s fierce exterior lies a gentle, gallant highlander who renews her soul, emboldens her, and offers her the one thing she never thought she would possess—true love. Now that Alex has her whole heart, she’ll settle for nothing less than all of his.

A tortured highlander…

Haunted by violent nightmares of his dark past, Alex MacLean has put off getting married for as long as possible. But now he finds himself the husband of the fragile, beautiful Lena, and he’s drawn to her as he has never been to another. He vows to protect and heal her, and as she grows stronger, so does his love for her. Yet, his horrible memories and a treacherous task are preventing him from giving himself to her entirely, and the secrets he harbors threaten to destroy their life together.

A union…

When Lena uncovers a dangerous scheme involving Alex, she embarks on a desperate journey to save the man she loves. But Alex still hasn’t let her in, and he runs the risk of losing her—and his life—unless he can accept that his once delicate wife is now an ally strong enough to light his way.

This is by far not the first book by Julie Johnston that I have read and it not the first book in this series either and again this hero and his heroine took my heart by storm.

Seeing the two of them so vulnerable and on the other hand so determined to be there for the other one, wow... I couldn't stop falling in love with them. They are so sweet and hurt and messed up and both of them just desperately want to help the one they..yes, the one they love.
Somehow it was Lena who became stronger and more courageous with each page that I turned and the big, strong warrior, well, she made it her mission to get him there as well. Sometimes it's not the things you can fight or even touch that keep you prisoner but the things, the memories that your mind provides. And, well, despite his gentleness and his kind heart, Alex definitely has his share of baggage and for a man as strong as him, it is not easy to let someone else in to help.

Seeing Lena and Alex free themselves from the hurt and the pain of their past was amazing. Lena is a wonderful heroine, warm, loving and, yes, courageous, even when things get rough and I was so happy for her and for Alex. Alex might just learn that he has married more than he has bargained for ...in a good way though. And Alex, wow, hard, demanding, fair, kind and gentle and just amazing.

Captivating and sweet, this book kept me glued to my reader. I loved the story and meeting old friends again, I loved those wonderful, complex and interesting characters and I was captivated once more by the author's way to tell those stories. After having read this book, I started to re-read the series and I must admit that I am really looking forward to the next books by Julie Johnstone and I just hope that we will learn more about our hero and our heroine in the future and, of course, about their friends as well.

Romancing the Scot (The Pennington Family #1) by May McGoldrick

Romancing the Scot (The Pennington Family, #1)

Blurb:

In this stunning series starter by USA Today bestselling author May McGoldrick, meet the new generation of Penningtons...five brothers and sisters of passion and privilege. Enter their aristocratic world…where each will fight injustice and find love.

Hugh Pennington—Viscount Greysteil, Lord Justice of the Scottish Courts, hero of the Napoleonic wars—is a grieving widower with a death wish. When he receives an expected crate from the continent, he is shocked to find a nearly dead woman inside. Her identity is unknown, and the handful of American coins and the precious diamond sown into her dress only deepen the mystery.

Grace Ware is an enemy to the English crown. Her father, an Irish military commander of Napoleon’s defeated army. Her mother, an exiled Scottish Jacobite. When Grace took shelter in a warehouse, running from her father’s murderers through the harbor alleyways of Antwerp, she never anticipated bad luck to deposit her at the home of an aristocrat in the Scottish Borders. Baronsford is the last place she could expect to find safety, and Grace feigns a loss of memory to buy herself time while she recovers.

Hugh is taken by her beauty, passion, and courage to challenge his beliefs and open his mind. Grace finds in him a wounded man of honor, proud but compassionate. When their duel of wits quickly turns to passion and romance, Grace’s fears begin to dissolve…until danger follows her to the very doors of Baronsford. For, unknown to either of them, Grace has in her possession a secret that will wreak havoc within the British government. Friend and foe are indistinguishable as lethal forces converge to tear the two lovers apart or destroy them both.

I loved "Borrowed Dreams" by May McGoldrick, which is one of my All-time-favorites and I seriously can't tell you how often I've read and re-read that book. "Romancing the Scot" is the first book in the series about the Pennington Family, the book about the next generation.
Everything that I loved about "Borrowed Dreams" and its wonderful characters, can be found in this book again. You can feel Lyon and Millicent in their children and their children's actions and values. Their pursuit of justice and of what is right, their compassion and their love for those around them, are the perfect mixture of their parents' qualitites that I loved so much. And of course, we get to meet Lyon and Millicent as well.

If you read "Borrowed Dreams", you might remember Jo, sweet little Jo, whose birth we witnessed and well, there's also Hugh, Lyon's and Millicent's son. We meet those two in "Romancing the Scot" at a time, when Hugh slowly starts to open up to the possibility of loving again after having suffered a terrible loss during the war. Enters Grace, a young woman who is saved by Hugh and nursed back to health by Hugh and Jo. Grace has lost everything but she might just have found the one place where she finds a purpose and maybe even a place for her to stay. If she can avoid being killed or being convicted as a traitor, of course.

Right from the start this book felt so right that I already knew that this would become another favorite of mine. This is a book that I'll definitely read again and again and again and that I'll have to buy in print as well as soon as it is out (and I hope that there will be a print book as well!).
Somehow I need my favorite books in print as well even though I almost never read them because I always read the ebook. Nope, it's not logical, it's that nerd thing, you know? ;-)

★★
Oh, those if you who have read "Borrowed Dreams" will probably laugh as hard as I did, when Hugh and Grace start discussing certain books. Lyon and his refusal to read those volumes come to mind, somehow, don't ask me why, just - read yourself!

Excerpt:

Looking the shipping crate over for damage and seeing none, he retrieved an iron crow from a workbench. Jo was standing inside the doors, eyeing the box doubtfully from a safe distance.
Come closer. It won’t bite.”
Not a chance. From the smell of that thing, a person would think you’re importing cadavers. Have you also taken up being a Resurrectionist as a hobby?”
He patted the crate affectionately. “This sweet thing has been sitting in the bowels of a ship from Antwerp. You know what the hold of a ship smells like?”
Actually, I don’t.” She held a handkerchief to her nose and drew closer. “But I think you’re correct with the reference to ‘bowels.’”
Hugh took the first nail out. “Well, stand back, since you’ve become so prissy. Though I recall a younger version of you leading the rest of us through bogs and marshes that smelled no better.”
Of course! But as I recall, we had frogs and turtles and the occasional dragon that needed hunting,” she replied with a smile. “Very well. Open it and let’s see this treasure of yours.”
Prying off the top took him only a moment. Throwing it to the side, he pulled back the tarp that covered the basket and then stared curiously at the dark green rags bundled at the bottom.
Leaning in, Hugh’s enthusiasm evaporated as a horrid realization settled in. This was no pile of old clothing. A shock of blond hair. A shoe. A hand. The body of a dead woman lay curled up in the gondola.
Bloody hell.”
What is it?” Immediately, Jo was at his side. “Good God!”
Hugh climbed in and crouched beside the body. He took her hand. She was cold to the touch. His heart sank. The crate had been shipped from Antwerp. To be trapped for so many days with no water, no food, in the cold and damp of the ship’s hold. He had no idea who this woman was or how she came to be in here.
The thought struck him. Perhaps it wasn’t an inadvertent act. Perhaps she was murdered and her body had been dumped into the crate.
Dismay and alarm clawed at him as he pushed away the matted ringlets of golden hair. She was young. He lifted her chin. The body had none of the stiffness of postmortem. He stared at her lips. He may have imagined it but they seemed to have moved.
Bright . . .” The whisper was a mere rustle of leaves in a breeze.
The fingers jerked and came to life, clutching at his hand.
She’s not dead,” he called to Jo, relieved. “Send for the doctor. I’ll take her to the house.”
His sister ran out, calling for help, and he lifted the woman. She emitted a low groan. Her limbs had been locked in the same cramped position for so many days. Hugh propped her over the side of the gondola.
Stay with me,” he encouraged. “Talk to me.”
Holding the woman in place, he clambered from the basket and then gently lifted her out, cradling her in his arms. She weighed next to nothing.
As they went out into the rain, he feared she was about to die. The exertion of trying to breathe showed on her face. He’d seen this on the battlefield. The final effort before death.
Starting up the path, he stumbled, not realizing the woman’s skirts were dragging on the ground. He staggered but caught himself before they went down. Her head lolled against his chest, her face gray and mask-like. She appeared to be slipping away. It would be a shame that she’d survived the crossing only to perish now.
A dagger point of anger pierced Hugh’s brain as he recalled another dismal day when he’d lifted two other bodies, wrapped in burial shrouds, from a wooden box.
Talk to me,” he ordered. “Say something.”
As he made his way up the hill toward the house, a bolt of lightning streaked across the sky above Baronsford. Thunder shook the ground and the sky opened, unleashing fierce torrents of rain on them.
His wife. His son. Hugh hadn’t been there for them. They’d died as he and the British army were being chased by the French across Spain. He’d been trying to save his men’s lives, not knowing that those most precious to him were suffering.
You’ve survived a horrifying ordeal. Give me the chance to save you.”
The woman struggled weakly in Hugh’s arms, and her head tipped back. He watched as her lips parted, welcoming the wetness of the falling rain.
We’re almost there.”
Bright . . .” she murmured.
He looked into her face and saw she was trying hard to open her eyes.
Yes, brighter than that crate,” he said, encouraged by her effort. Any movement, however small, gave him hope. “And you’ve been in there for Lord knows how long.”

Bound to a Spy by Sharon Cullen

Blurb:

A fierce Highland lass puts her life—and her heart—in the hands of a dashing British spy in this exhilarating romance from the USA Today bestselling author of Wed to a Spy.

Rose Turner’s mother sent her to the court of Mary, Queen of Scots, to give her a better life. Raised with rowdy brothers in a notorious border clan, Rose has plenty of experience fighting and thieving—and practically none when it comes to matters of decorum and discretion. Without a single ally, she has little hope of making a good marriage to salvage her family’s reputation. But after overhearing several influential lords plotting to murder the King of Scotland, Rose meets a man after all: a handsome spy trying to shield her from danger.

As one of the Queen Elizabeth’s top agents, Will Sheffield has come up north to keep a close eye on the goings-on at Mary’s court. A consummate professional, Will notices Rose’s presence at the secret meeting . . . and he’s not the only one. The wild, naïve beauty has made a fearsome enemy—and only Will can keep her safe. But after an attempt on Rose’s life pulls them tantalizingly close, Will faces an agonizing choice between professional loyalty or powerful passion.

Torn between his duty and his rapidly growing feelings for a certain young lady, Will desperately tries to keep this stubborn and far too independent Scottish lass safe while navigating the very treacherous seas at the court of Mary, the Queen of Scots.

We met Will, our hero, briefly in Wed to a Spy, the first book in this series, where he was a fellow spy at Mary's court when Simon, his fellow spy, and Aimée were married - and everything else happened that precedes Bound to a Spy and sets the mood for the events in this book.

This is the fifth book by Sharon Cullen that I've read and once again she didn't disappoint. Lots of action, some very, well, romantic romance, Scots, spies, treason, a bunch of villains and, of course, a wonderful HEA.
Even though our hero is not a Scot, he has some redeeming qualities, one of them the fact that he doesn't let anybody steal his girl and would even oppose the queen and her orders for the sake of this most stubborn, most irritable and most beloved lass of his.

Will and Rose are very strong characters in a really great, fast-paced and very entertaining story that I absolutely enjoyed. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series (and I sincerely hope that there will be a next one!) and every other book by Sharon Cullen that comes my way.

The Highlander Is All That (Untamed Highlanders #4) by Sabrina York

Out today!

Blurb:

Elizabeth St. Claire has always been hard to please. Dreaming solely of Highlander men her whole life, no prancing London Lord can stand a chance at winning her heart...
… But perhaps a Scotsman can.
Elizabeth watches intrigued as the Highlander of her dreams, a Scotsman named Hamish Robb, arrives to oversee her season at the behest of her cousin, the Duke of Caithness. Elizabeth doesn’t hide her feelings for the striking Scot. But Hamish, determined to obey his order to protect the St. Claire sisters, steadfastly rejects her every seducing lure.
Believing that the debutante Elizabeth deserves a better, wealthier man, Hamish continues to turn away from her affection, even though he doesn’t exactly want to. Can this Highlander Scot resist the tempting seductress’ attempts to win his heart?

Alright, first of all, this book was fun to read. I wanted to kick the one or the other highlander's lovely back every now and then and then there was this time where I wanted to do so much more to the one or the other lord...

But let's start at the beginning when two brawny Scots instead of one duke arrive and well, things start to happen rather quickly. And somehow dear Aunt Esmeralda, the chaperone of said duke's cousins, might have a very different idea of an excellent match than her four young wards. While Esmeralda sets out to reel in wealthy, titled suitors, the girls may have slightly different priorities.

With four young women in the house, love and chaos reign and even brawny Scots get caught in that whirlwind.

Even though they are sisters, the four young women are very different - and they fall for very different men as well. Just, well, let's say that the smell of pomade used in abundance is nothing any of them suffer well and the man behind that smell...ugh, he is not much better despite his title and his wealth. Reading the book you can easily see those sisters, falling in love, debating, caring for each other, teasing and, well, falling in love a bit more. It is fun to see them wreck havoc on all those wonderful plans Aunt Esmeralda has, especially as they don't care for the ton and its rules.

In the middle of it all, there are our Scots. Protecting the girls, chasing after them when they run of...or worse..., falling in love themselves and... then disaster strikes and things get really tough. I was really upset when that happened and couldn't put the book down because I had to know that everything would end well.
Fortunately, the book didn't disappoint and I got my HEA. I loved that even though Aunt Esmeralda set out to catch lords for the girls, the girls didn't care but went to find love and happiness and maybe even a Scotsman could be a part of this bundle of happiness.
Wonderfully written, humorous and fast-paced, this book was highly entertaining and sweet, I can definitely recommend it!

The Scotsman Who Saved Me (Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen #1) by Hannah Howell

The Scotsman Who Saved Me by Hannah Howell

Blurb:

From New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell comes a brand new series featuring the MacEnroys, a family of seven strong, seductive Scottish brothers who have come to America with nerves of steel—and who will take no prisoners when it comes to love…

A brutal attack on Emily Stanton’s family has left her for dead . . . until she is found in the woods by a handsome stranger with a thick brogue who vows to protect her. There’s only one problem: As a woman with a noble English background, she has no business keeping company with such a man.

For Scotsman Iain MacEnroy, Emily’s high-tone accent is a bitter reminder of the oppressive regime he left behind. The last thing he needs is to be burdened by the needs of a beautiful, blue-eyed Englishwoman. But taking care of elegant, educated Emily begins to transform Iain in ways he never imagined. Could it be that the deep divisions from the old world no longer apply in the new—and that Iain and Emily can share a passion as lush and wild as the Scottish highlands themselves?

Ohhhh, I loved this book! Admittedly, it was a bit irritating at first to find my Scotsmen living (and loving) in America but as the setting was amazingly well done, a perfect blend of Scottishness and, well, the stories of America in the time after the highland clearances.

Yup and that's exactly why we find this bunch of Scots in America as well, but those clearances are not the reason why Emily Stanton and her family found their way to it. In contrast to our Scots, Emily's family as English nobles represents everything Iain MacEnroy and his brothers have learned to hate.
When Emily fled England with her sister and her brother-in-law, she hoped to be able to keep them safe. You can't keep someone safe who doesn't really understand what - or rather who he is fleeing from...

Finding an English noblewoman in the middle of nowhere, wasn't exactly what Iain had planned to do but when he and his brother come across some murdered settlers, they stop by to find out whether there is someone left who needs help. Despite being severely wounded, Emily recovers under the care of Iain's (expanded and rather large) family.
When those that are responsible for the murder of her family come back to finish what they have started, will Iain be able to protect this sassy and courageous woman who has somehow managed to catch his heart?

This is by far not the first book by Hannah Howell that I've read and it definitely won't be the last! I can't wait to find out a bit more about Iain's brothers and of course, there are also some other books of hers left that I haven't read - yet.
I love the atmosphere and the characters in her books as much as the wonderfully plotted stories and the captivating style. "The Scotsman who saved me" is another brilliant example of it and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Falling for the Highlander (Highlanders #4) by Lynsay Sands (audio book)

 Blurb:

Lady Murine Carmichael has known her share of bad luck. But when her debt-ridden half-brother tries to sell her off in exchange for a few Scottish horses, it’s the final straw. If keeping her freedom means escaping through harsh countryside alone, so be it. She has barely begun her journey when she lands an unlikely escort—the brawny Highlander who just refused to buy her virtue.

Dougall Buchanan was disgusted by Lord Danvries’ shameful offer, but Murine herself tempts him beyond measure. Even bedraggled and dusty, the lass glows with beauty and bravery. Dougall wants to do more than just help her flee. He wants to protect her—with his life and his heart—if she’ll only let him. For Murine may be pursued by a powerful foe, but nothing compares to the fiery courage of a Highlander in love.

I tried, I really did. I loved many other books by Lynsay Sands and I had been so looking forward to this book and I really wanted to like it, especially as I had been worried about Lady Murine and wanted to know what happened to her ever since she left with her brother in "The Highlander takes a Bride".
Unfortunately, I couldn't finish the book.
Don't get me wrong, it is well-written, it is sweet and nice and the narration (I listened to the audio book) was really well done and I really like to listen to Ellen Newlands but I just couldn't listen to the rest of the book.

I am pretty sure that it would have been different if I hadn't read so many books by the author before I started listening to "Falling for the Highlander" but I felt like I was listening to some interchangeable book whose story was rather foreseeable, everybody was doing what I expected them to do, the heroine was sweet, innocent and rather naive whereas the hero was strong and honorable and, well, you know the rest, right?
Apart from the story line that seemed very familiar, I was missing the chemistry between our hero and our heroine. They seemed nice together, right, but there was nothing that made me feel as if they were made for each other or the next dream team in the making. Nothing.

I would have loved to learn more about Lady Murine and her future but I don't think that I will try again to read this book or to listen to it.
It is still three stars because the audio book is well done and I like the narration, the book itself - it is alright but ...

The Scotsman by Virginia Brown

Blurb:

Pushed beyond his limits. . .

Scotsman Alexander Fraser has lost too much in his fight for freedom from the English. So when his younger brother is taken hostage by the cruel Earl of Warfield, Alex retaliates by kidnapping the earl's delicate daughter . . . only to find she's nothing he expected.

Taken for ransom. . .

Catherine Worth, daughter of Warfield, knows her value. She's worth nothing to her father except as, now tarnished, property to be traded through marriage to a titled ally. He won't trade a valuable prisoner for her return. Her life is in the hands of her cold and ruthless captor as he realizes that there will be no trade. What she doesn't count on is falling in love with a man like none she's ever known.

Neither expected passion. Neither expected the choices they'd face. Alex must someday give her up . . . or forfeit his brother's life.

This book was nice but also rather foreseeable. I know, many of those books are foreseeable and that's exactly why we read them but I felt as if something unique was missing. Oh, the hero and the heroine deal well with each other and their problems are tough and very real but somehow it couldn't hold my attention. Maybe, if I read it again another time, I might be more captivated but somehow I doubt that. Oh, the story is fine and the characters are nice but... Of course, not everything was foreseeable but it was lacking some kind of spark and something that makes it different.
I liked it well enough but I'm not sure that I will ever read it again.

The Highland Commander (Lords of the Highlands #2) by Amy Jarecki

Remember the
The next book in the series is out today!

Blurb:

She cannot resist the man behind the mask...
As the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl, Lady Magdalen Keith is not one to partake in lavish balls or other frivolities. Yet at her father's urging, she agrees to dance with the battle-weary officers at this year's holiday masquerade. It's practically her civic duty! But when one such officer-whose dashing good looks cannot be disguised by a mere mask-sweeps her off her feet and into his arms, the innocent lass can't help herself. Her lips are his for the taking. But will he betray his country for a kiss?
Navy lieutenant Aiden Murray has spent too many months at sea to be immune to the charms of this lovely beauty. Even after he returns to his ship, she lives in his dreams. But when he discovers Maddie's true identity-and learns that her father is accused of treason-will the brawny Scot risk his life to follow his heart?

I must admit that even though I really enjoyed reading this book, I had some problems deciding how to rate it. It is entertaining, thrilling and captivating, well-written and has wonderful characters but - and that is a huge "but" in my romance-seeking heart- sometimes I thought that it was a bit too much of bad luck and, well, it probably reflects the times rather too well because those times were harsh and life wasn't predictable, especially when you were born out of wedlock and lived on the outskirts of society due to your status.

Rules and social status dominated the lives of the people and there was no Declaration of Human Rights or whatever to protect you when you were disgraced.

Unfortunately, truth and reality do not always mix well with romance and it took me a bit to accept that some really bad things happened to "my" heroes. *sigh*
Reality-is-a-bitch-issues aside, the book was really great and I didn't just enjoy the well-plotted story but also the interaction of the characters. So - once again a great book that I can recommend.
