Train Wreck by Elise Faber

Blurb:

train wreck
noun

1. A chaotic or disastrous situation.
2. An utter catastrophe or mess.
3. A devastating calamity or source of trouble.
4. Pepper O’Brien.

As the daughter of a famed film producer, Pepper O’Brien is Hollywood royalty.

Also, her life sucks.

Because, unfortunately for her, the old adage is true: money can’t buy everything—including grace, true love, or the ability to not screw up every single opportunity her life has brought her.

After her latest disaster, Pepper moves across the country to start over but, as usual, her life has other plans, namely in the form of Derek Cashette, her former teenage crush and now ridiculously handsome friend of her older brother.

Derek is determined to salvage the train wreck of her life and Pepper’s determined not to let him. Her life is her problem and, dammit, why can’t she be her own hero?

But sometimes fate has other plans. Or maybe it’s hormones. Especially when her rescuer comes with a killer smile, a chest Thor would be jealous of, and a butt that any girl just wants to—

I really really loved this book! Aaaaaand I really really hated Pepper's family. Argh. Okay, let's get back to the nice part, the book. And the story about Pepper and Derek because those two are so sweet together, you just have to love them!

I also loved how the author took situations that seemed to be underlining Pepper's history of being a train wreck and with Derek looking at those situations now from a distance, he sees something else and understands her and her family's dynamic a bit better. Of course, that doesn't stop him from doing stupid things and messing things up but he is determined and kind and...well. Maybe he'll end up with an HEA, who knows, right?

As a reader, you get the way Pepper's sees herself and the way others look at her (and, alright, sometimes they are right but - are they really always right? Truly?) but you can also see Pepper taking control when it is needed, Pepper acting capably and confidently. Sometimes she is the one picking up the pieces (or the shards) who turns a bad situation into a success - or some shards and some pieces of driftwood into a thing of beauty.

Looking closer you get the chance to see that she's indeed more than just chaotic or just a mess. She is even more than just the daughter of a famous producer. And so it is time for Derek to once again make his inner hero dust off his super suit and...well, do what superheroes do who fall in love with an amazing young woman:
Fight for her and her happiness!

The more I thought about this book, the more I loved how well constructed this story is. Add some really amazing characters, some villains that you'd love to feed to the sharks (symbolically speaking, of course) and you get a really wonderful story that I can wholeheartedly recommend.

Her Favorite Duke (The 1797 Club Book 2) by Jess Michaels

Blurb:

The second exciting book in the bestselling 1797 Club series by USA TODAY Bestselling Author Jess Michaels.

Simon Greene, Duke of Crestwood has been obsessed with Margaret Rylon for years. There is only one thing standing between them: her fiancé, who also happens to be his best friend. He is desperate not to destroy everything in his life by giving in to his desires, but when Meg and Simon are trapped alone together overnight during a storm, the resulting scandal not only breaks Meg’s existing engagement, but forces Simon to offer for her instead.

Margaret is sorry to have hurt her family and her fiancé, but all she’s ever wanted was Simon. Her determination to make a happy life with him is only heightened when they submit to passions that have long dwelled beneath the surface. But while Simon may give her his body, he withholds his heart out of guilt and fear of what a connection to her may expose.

And if he doesn’t learn to fight for her soon, they both may lose a chance at happiness.

Length: Full length book
Heat Level: Yep. So much.

This is the second book in the 1797 Club series, but can be read as a standalone.

I love the books by Jess Michaels and I've read quite a lot of them up to now.
This one is good as well but it didn't captivate me as much as the other books. My problem with this book was definitely that for a very very long time the hero and the heroine had no hope left. Sure, I had a certain idea that this book might end with an HEA but somewhere around the first third of the book I almost gave up hope as well that that would actually happen.
Somewhere around the middle of the book, I felt that, well, somehow, someone should please do something to make our hero Simon wake up. Alright, maybe I just wished for someone to kick him, hard, because...yup, just because.

Like all the other characters in Jess Michaels' books, Simon and Margaret are complex characters and getting to know them, you understand where Simon comes from and why it is so hard for him to fight for his happiness. Meg does also have to learn to stand up for herself and - let's just say that sometimes I was a bit frustrated and  that I was starting to doubt that they would ever leave the somewhat turbulent beginnings behind them and just enjoy that their dreams may now may come true. At least their dreams might come true if they ever wake up...
Oh, I was frustrated with their friend (and Meg's former fiancé) Graham as well and don't get me started on Meg's brother James. Such a nice and well-meaning guy but  -seriously? At sixteen? And without ever asking her what she wanted?

Despite everything though, I really enjoyed reading this book and I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series that'll tell us more about Graham!

This is Part II of a 3-Part Upper YA and New Adult Serial about a woman and her journey of discovery, adventure, and an unforgettable love

Reading Order:
Storm Part I: Released April 25th
Storm Revealed Part II coming May 30th
Storm Unleashed Part III coming June 27th

Alright - if you read this, I hope that you've already read the first part of this book because otherwise, I'm not sure that there won't be any spoilers.
Soooo - if you haven't read it, start there.
You have read it? Fine. Go on, this review is for you!

We left Lexi waiting for Storm to return when she had finally accepted that she would never be able to go home.
Of course, that doesn't ease her mind when she worries about her little brother Tommy whose happiness and health depend on her and her ability to care for him. Despite worrying about him, she opens herself up to Storm and his people and when she finally fully understands the magic of the place and those around her she is intrigued. And - maybe a little bit more than that. Slowly a certain pesky (and sweet)(and gorgeous) captain gets under her skin and claims her heart.
Will she be able to be happy here?

I really loved this part of the story as well (and I hated Ednah again at the end of it because...well, because. Right? Who doesn't hate  cliffhangers no matter how well done they are?) and it was fun to see those two, Storm and Lexi, fight and fall in love. What does another former kidnapped woman say about her husband? There's something very romantic about a rough seaman turning into a giant teddy bear when he sees you [...] Well, the same can definitely be said about Storm. You feel his love for Lexi and even though she fights it, you can feel how much he means to Lexi as well. Their chemistry is amazing.

All in all, it is a fantastic story, funny, imaginative, intense and original with amazing characters - I love it. And I'm already counting the days till the release of part III....

Duke with Benefits (Studies in Scandal #2) by Manda Collins

Duke with Benefits by Manda Collins

Blurb:

LADY + DUKE = TRUE LOVE?

Lady Daphne Forsyth is a brilliant mathematician with a burning passion for puzzles. When she learns that the library belonging to her benefactress houses the legendary Cameron Cipher an encrypted message that, once solved, holds the key to great riches Daphne is on the case. Unfortunately, her race to unlock the cipher's code is continually thwarted by a deliciously handsome distraction she hadn't counted on... and cannot resist.
Dalton Beauchamp, the Duke of Maitland, is curious as to why Daphne is spending so much time snooping around his aunt's bookshelves. He s even more intrigued by her bold yet calculating manner: She is unapologetic about her secret quest...and the fiery attraction that develops between them both. But how can they concentrate on solving a perplexing enigma once the prospect of true love enters the equation?

Daphne and Dalton are a wonderful couple who compliment each other very well. Daphne is a mathematical genius whose blunt manner has always caused many problems with those around her whereas Dalton may not be a genius but he is a very warm and understanding person who sees the amazing woman behind the social ineptitude. I loved to see  how he helped her and looked out for her, how he fell in love with her and how he found a way to explain to her why certain simple things like saying "thank you" and offering praise go a long way to making people accept you,

As Daphne has no reason at all to trust any man, it takes a lot for her, to accept Dalton's help and to start, slowly, very slowly, to trust him - and to finally dare to fall .in love with him.
While those two try to sort out their feelings for each other there's also a big mystery to solve. Working to figure out this riddle and find the hidden treasure while trying to find a murderer at the same time, and keep each other safe, those living at Beauchamp House come to care for each other deeply, For someone like Daphne who hasn't had anyone to trust and to depend upon for a very long time, this is a wonderful experience.

Beauchamp House was left to four women, all of them brilliant scholars like their late benefactress, all of them as different as their scholarly interests but they didn't know how much all their lives would change when they went to live there at Beauchamp House!
As a reader, I loved to see their interactions, how they all grew closer and what an impact their new circumstances had on their lives.
The story is interesting and well plotted but it is the characters that really made me fall for this book. Especially Daphne took my heart by storm and it was wonderful to see her spread her wings and dare to live - and love.

Oh, should I mention that the first book in the series "Ready Set Rogue"  went straight on my wish list?

Excerpt Blitz - Duke with Benefits (Studies in Scandal #2) by Mandy Collins

LADY + DUKE = TRUE LOVE?

  Excerpt

“There you are, my dear,” said the Earl of Forsyth with a beaming smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
Maitland saw at once that Daphne favored him. Her green eyes were the same shade as his, though there were lines of dissipation bracketing the earl’s. And though his expertly cropped blond hair was shot through with silver, what remained of its original color was the same shade as hers. But whereas Daphne’s gaze was focused off to the left of whomever she conversed with, like a bird hovering just over a branch, Forsyth’s speared one with cold calculation. As he did to Daphne now.
“You are looking well, Daphne,” the earl continued, stepping forward to embrace his daughter, who looked as uncomfortable with the contact as Maitland had ever seen her. “The sea air agrees with you. As I knew it would.”
“The sea is very beautiful,” Daphne replied woodenly. “Why are you here, Father?”
“Is that any way to greet your Papa?” the earl chided, stepping back from her and wandering farther into the room, standing to stare out at the gardens below through the window. “I’ve traveled all the way from London to see you. And this lovely estate. I must admit that when I first learned of your inheritance, I thought it was all some sort of trick. But you would have your own way and leave the loving bosom of your family no matter what I said. Now that I’m here, though, and see it in person, I must admit that it’s a lovely spot. And your chaperone, Lady Serena, is quite beautiful, isn’t she? A widow, I take it?”
His jaw clenched at the man’s mention of Serena, and Maitland thought perhaps it was time to announce himself. Daphne seemed not to realize he’d followed her in, and the earl was too busy waxing rhapsodic over the beauties of Beauchamp House.
“I don’t believe we’ve met, Forsyth,” he said forcefully, stepping up to stand side by side with Daphne. He gave a slight bow, perhaps not quite as deep as was warranted, but not caring. “The Duke of Maitland. I am a friend of your daughter’s, you might say.”
What he meant by that last, he could not say, but the man made every bit of protective instinct within him go on the alert. He was her father, but all the same Maitland knew that Daphne was no safer with him than she would have been with Sommersby if he still lived.
At the sound of the duke’s voice, Lord Forsyth turned with almost comical haste from the window and stared. For the barest flicker, he looked angry. Well, if he were upset at the knowledge that his daughter was not without friends, then he would simply have to swallow it. Because Maitland was damned if he’d leave her alone with the fellow.
“Duke,” Lord Forsyth said with a tilt of his head, “I am pleased to make your acquaintance. I was a friend of your father’s, and had little notion I’d be meeting you here. He was a good man, your father.”
His father had been nothing of the sort, but Maitland was hardly going to discuss it with Forsyth.
“I am here visiting my sister, Lady Serena,” Maitland said coolly, letting the other man know in tone rather than words that he had not appreciated the older man’s speculative words about her earlier. “And of course my cousin, Kerr. He only recently married another of the heiresses here, and resides here with her.”

 ***

Forsyth’s eyes narrowed at the implication that Daphne was well protected should her father wish to cause trouble. At least that was the message Maitland was endeavoring to send. And by the looks of it, Forsyth read him loud and clear.
“Capital, capital,” the earl said with false cheer. “A merry party you must all make here. I had no idea you were in such fine company here, Daphne. No notion at all.”
“Because we have not spoken since I left,” Daphne said, looking from her father to Maitland then back again, as if wondering what went on between them. “And now, father, I really must ask you to leave. I have a great deal of work to do and . . .”
“Don’t be absurd, Daphne,” her father said with a shake of his head. “I only just arrived. And there is something very important I must speak to you about.” He turned to Maitland with a raised brow. “I’m sure you’ll excuse us, Duke. I’m afraid what I need to tell my daughter is private family business.”
Maitland was opening his mouth to tell the man he would leave Daphne alone with him when hell froze over, when Daphne did it for him.
“Maitland stays,” she said, reaching out to grasp him by the arm. It was as much of a cry for help as he’d ever thought he’d see from her. Wordlessly, he slipped her arm into his, as if they were about to promenade round the room. He covered her hand with his, keenly aware of the thread of tension in her.
Once more, the earl’s eyes narrowed, and he turned an assessing gaze on Maitland, perhaps realizing for the first time the threat coming at him from that direction.
His jaw clenched, Forsyth said grimly, “Very well. If you wish your friend to witness our dirty linen, so be it.” As if needing to be in motion in order to speak, the earl began to pace the area between the window and the fireplace. “You know, Daphne, you left me without any obvious means of recouping what I lost from years of paying that tutor of yours, old man Sommersby.”
“You agreed to pay him,” Daphne said tightly. “After I threatened to expose . . .”
Hastily, Forsyth continued, “And I am currently in need of funds. As such, I must insist you return to London with me for the time being and meet a particular gentleman who has expressed interest in marrying you. Though his birth is not as high as yours, he’s quite wealthy and will make you a good husband, I trust. He’s assured me he has no concern about your odd ways, if you’re as beautiful as your portrait.”
Before Maitland could burst out with the string of invectives the other man’s pronouncement inspired in him, Daphne said, “I cannot marry this person. I’ve never even met him. You promised me that I would not have to marry someone for money as long as I won enough at the tables. I did so. You promised me, father.”
“I never actually promised, Daphne.” Forsyth said with a shake of his head. “If you chose to interpret it as such, that is not my fault. Now, go pack your things.”
Daphne’s hand on Maitland’s arm gripped him tightly. And before he even knew what he was doing, he said, “I’m afraid that’s impossible, Forsyth. Daphne is staying here.”

 ***

“I don’t know who you think you are, Maitland,” said the earl through clenched teeth, “but I am her father, and I am well within my rights to take her back to London. Now, kindly take your hands off of her and let her go pack.”
“It might once have been your right, Forsyth,” Maitland said coldly, “but Lady Daphne is my betrothed now and as such, she will remain here. With me.”

Die Wellington-Saga - Versuchung von Nacho Figueras

Ein wenig seicht, aber durchaus sehr unterhaltsam:

Die Wellington-Saga - Versuchung von Nacho Figueras

Inhalt:

Slumber by J L Weil

Blurb:

There is no such thing as happily ever after. Everything Charlotte Winston thought she knew has been thrown out the window. From the moment she opens her eyes, the world she remembered ceases to exist, and in its place is a post-apocalyptic realm filled with unimaginable dangers. And one very smoking hot guy who has an uncanny ability to make her blood sing, then boil in a blink of an eye. Dash Darhk is everything her parents would hate. He's six feet and two inches of dark temptation and a killer smile, that's surely left a stream of broken hearts in his wake. But her parents are nowhere to be found. Charlotte is alone in this new world. Destroyed by a toxic mist, the land isn't the only thing altered, but the inhabitants as well. As Charlotte begins the hunt for her family, gifts she's never fathom awake inside her. And with the gifts come problems. Enormous ones. Charlotte is running out of options and places to hide. If she can't figure out who to trust-and fast-she will lose more than her heart. Fans of Hunger Games, The 100, and Divergent will fall in love with Slumber.

How many colors does a rainbow have - or what are you capable of once the mist has worked its magic?

Wow, I really enjoyed reading this book!
When I started to read the book, I put it down very soon because I just couldn't get into it. The next time I tried to read it - I didn't put it down till I had read the very last page.
Okay, there were times where I could have thrown my reader away because I was so furious and times were I was really, really upset but once I'd got into the story, it just kept me glued to the reader. Captivating and original and at the same time well written with a great story line - sounds good? Read it! It is that good!

When Charlotte wakes up "Snow White-stylish", everything is different. More than a hundred years have passed since the mist invaded the world and the world has changed - and not only the world, Charlotte herself is different. But, well, first of all, she has to survive traveling in this new world with Dash at her side, without getting her heart broken! Okay, that may not be the most important part, considering the fact that they are fighting to survive and are hunted by the Night Guard while searching for Charlotte's family but believe me, it might just turn out to be the most difficult part...

I loved the story and I loved that characters and I definitely can't wait to read the next book in the series! My first book by J.L. Weil but not my last one!
